Permalink Adobe buys Macromedia

The sad news earlier this week was that Adobe is set to buy Macromedia. I was so upset to hear this, I didn't even bother to blog it until several days later.

Sure, there will be some good benefits for users that regularly need to work with Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia's Freehand, the future intergration between the two apps will be a delight to use. But what of the competing products? Both companies have apps that complement each other, and in that way it will be a good fit. But both companies also have apps that compete. Which will survive? Adobe Imagemaker or Macromedia Fireworks? Adobe GoLive or Macromedia Dreamweaver?

Adobe has one less competitor and that does not sound good to me.

The media missed one interesting factoid on the story: These two companies, in their early years, were Macintosh only, and later to be ported to the Windows world.
