Permalink When do the ends justify the means?

We all heard the story of how the insurgents of Chechnya massacred Russian children, but the question has come up as to the difference between this, and the two atomic bombs dropped on two Japanese cities to end WWII.

In both cases, the ends were justified by the means. America justified it because in the end, it saved more lives than a prolonged war would have caused. And yet, hundreds of thousands of innocent children paid the price.

Russia has killed 10% of the population of Chechnya (by some estimates) and that includes women and children. The insurgents feel they have to fight fire with fire, in order to stop the war.

Are Russian children worth more than Chechnyan children? And are 400 children shot dead worse than the two A-bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

When I heard the news on TV, I couldn't help but think that the reason why the Chechnyans did this was largely ignored. It was presented quite simply of a case of goodies versus baddies. That didn't hold water when I was a kid, and it still doesn't. Sometimes I think that Hollywood has been set up purely to convince us that the world is full of heroes fighting evil.

hey, im just a 14-year old student from singapore who happened to stumble upon your blog while searching the web for stuff about utilitarianism.

with reference to your blog post i feel the ends don't justify the means in this case, but in the opposite way that we all usually view it. i mean, when we consider utilitarianism and of how the ends justify the means, its usually about how good consequences apparently make an intention morally proper as well. but in this case, its about how bad consequences with many deaths and such make the intention of the killings and bombings appear morally incorrect.

really interesting example.
