Permalink Better technologists in year 1900?

I once heard a story that said the lighting industry knew of a way to build light bulbs to last a hundred years or more, but that would put them out of business. Therefore, they only make them to last 2-4 years.

This story seems to lend credence to the rumour.

Perhaps the secret lies in not turning the light globe off? Or perhaps it is the independent power source. I have solar power and have only replaced one SL globe in 20 years. However, the incandescent globes are another matter...
