Permalink Got Osteoporosis?

"U.S. doctor visits for osteoporosis increased nearly fivefold from 1994 to 2003, but probably half of all women with the bone-thinning disease still have not been diagnosed, a study reports today."

Isn't it funny. I think milk consumption is also up fivefold during that time. Americans are also eating more meat than ever before, thanks to the Atkins craze (the diet actually dates back to the Civil War, and further).

Here's a little known secret: excess protein is known (or at least suspected) to leak calcium from your bone. So the more protein you eat, or drink (as in milk), you are doing more to increase your chances of osteoporosis - a rare condition found among vegetarians.

Other than diet, a good way to keep your calcium is to exercise, and in particular, lift weights. The more stress on your bones, the stronger they will get.

U.S.A. Today: Osteoporosis visits are up
