Permalink Do we really believe in Democracy?

Israel has had success in keeping out suicide bombers in the last few months. How did they do it? They built a wall in the west bank. It keeps out the people they want to keep out.

But all is not well. The World Court has condemned this action. More recently, the UN has called for its demolition. Israel and the US voted against the rest of the world.

I don't know much of the issue, so I don't know the reasons why the entire world is against the wall, especially when it has saved lives, but I do know that if America wants to be taken seriously about democratic ideals, then it should respect the wishes of the entire world. If not, the US continues to be seen as having double standards.

Tony..this isn't the first and won't be the last time the U.S. has cast a lonely vote to support Israel. The rest of the world would rather support the terrorist groups who would destroy Israel and the corrupt dictatorships that surround that tiny country.

The rest of the world is wrong on this one. Every administration since Truman has been committed to Israel's survival, and that shouldn't change.

First time visitor to your blog. I enjoyed it!

Tony,

Freedom is more important than democracy.

Freedom is inalienable (granted by God) - democracy is the means we have chosen to manifest that which is inalienable.

You are not free because government has deemed it. You are free because government has recognized it. Quite a difference. I might be outside the purview of the atheist, but it underscores why religion is so important in our society. Government cannot grant your rights. If they could, the rights would be something other than inalienable. It can recognize them and it can limit or take them away. Nothing more.

I believe we are free by right and democratic by choice.

That's my view, anyway :)
